The Super Fruit for Athletes: Tart Cherries
There are a growing number of scientific articles discussing the anti-inflammatory properties on tart cherries. Recent studies found decreased muscle soreness post exercise in distance runners who consumed the juice daily for seven days. The benefits of tart cherries will:
• Help decrease post exercise inflammation
• Reduce free radical build up from exercise.
• Research links this fruits’ antioxidant health benefits for arthritis, Gout, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancers.
What makes this super fruit so healthful? The 17 different anti-oxidants that tart cherries contain. They are unique because they contain the anti-oxidant (flavonoid), anthocyanin1 and 2. Anthocyanin’s are the culprit for the red color and the healthful benefits of reducing inflammation in the body. These beneficial fruits contain other anti-oxidants that help boost immunity. They are packed full of fiber and vitamin A and C.
How to incorporate tart cherries into your sports nutrition regime:
Pre-workout:
• Oatmeal with dried tart cherries
• ¼- ½ cup dried cherries for those times you go straight out on a ride
• 8oz. glass of tart cherry juice for your pre-hydration fluid
During
• Coconut water with cherry juice
• ¼ cup of dried cherries for your fuel, good replacement of blocks or chews (UNLESS you are a salty sweater, no sodium in these guys)
WARNING: high in fiber, may cause you to use a restroom
Post
• Tart cherry juice recovery drink
• 12 oz. of tart cherry juice, ½ scoop of whey protein (usually 10grams of protein), banana, 2 tbsp. agave syrup
• Recovery foods: yogurt and frozen cherries, trail mix with dried tart cherries, dried cherry bran muffin
Tart cherries are a super food, for athletes. Incorporating them into your daily diet, and in your sports nutrition regime is a great natural way to take care of your body and support your athletic performance.
