Another stout training ride in the history books today. Big thanks to those that showed up to put the work in: Todd R, Ron G., Kia, Vicki, Wes, Dan D., Gil and Don B. We also picked up John at Alton and Jeffrey (spotted rolling out of the Circle K parking lot mowing down a hotdog, lol). Said dog would prove costly later on the 133. Some good tempo climbing today with the majority of the group staying together in/around Newport Coast. Has Ron ever told you guys how much he likes climbing? For a tall dude he sure gets it done. He also snuck off the front a couple of times but was reeled back in by our resident take-out specialist - John. Memorable move of the day was a large group warping past us as we cruised north of Huntington, then seeing John (3rd wheel) hit the nitrous blowing past them to the front of their group, causing some verbal distress. Second place is awarded to Angry Recumbent Man, who taught us all a lesson by dropping our group. For a sideshow bike, that guy had some legs, eh? For the record, it was me who slammed the door on him preventing his presence inside our paceline. When I have a set of chainrings at almost eye level, a man has to draw the line somewhere. If I want to see the circus I\'ll head to Costa Mesa. Don and Dan exited the ride to Back Bay while the group headed onto Bayside to enjoy the view the beautiful people have and tried hard to not get killed riding past the farmers market. After a philosophical discussion about the disposition of the father on a "family" sticker on a minivan, we continued south into Laguna, where we finally had the wind at our backs heading out of town. Todd wanted me to point out that he loves that section because it pegs his heartrate just so. We had some nice teamwork pacing up the 133, everyone looking smooth and enjoying the rising temps. Wes and I took over to finish the section before turned onto Laguna Canyon Road. Remember John and his early morning snack? Well, that dog didn\'t hunt. In fact it expanded into quite a little anchor, forcing John to concede to the Oscar Meyer gods and pop off the back. Next time make it a taquito and a latte at the Mobil station. Fine dining, indeed.
Well, enough of the yackety-yack. Here is the dirt:
72.8 miles
(no elevation gain because my 305 is piece of crap)
Average spped: 18.7mph (nice, one of our better efforts)
Ride time: 3:53:51
